$50 and a skateboard

That’s what it took to start Mama O’s. Unable to find any satisfying store bought kimchi, Kheedim asked his mom (Mama O) to teach him how to make kimchi.


He would take the Chinatown bus from NYC to DC to make a batch and then bring it back on the bus.


He couldn’t afford a taxi so he rolled the kimchi home on his skateboard.

A chance meeting with a butcher

Kheedim: "Hey, how are you can I get some ribs?"

Jeffrey: "If you eat that with kimchi and rice you are eating like a king!"

Kheedim: "who you telling. You like kimchi? I make it I’ll bring some by."


The next week Kheedim asked him how he liked it. Jeffrey said "I want to start carrying it."

Everything changed

This interaction led us to our first customer and then we added some more.


In the beginning, deliveries were made on the subway. Mama O's Premium Kimchi began as an accident. Kheedim never intended to start a company, he just needed some kimchi. His parents (Mama & Papa O)
lived a couple hundred miles away so going over to bum a jar was not convenient.


The kimchi options in stores (mostly Asian markets) tasted terrible, were full of unnecessary ingredients, or both. So, Kheedim asked Mama O to teach him how to make it. Kheedim took the Chinatown bus to DC many times to make batches of kimchi to bring back to NYC. Most of the kimchi was shared with friends, and occasional strangers, who eventually encouraged Kheedim to make his product available to a larger community.


Mama O's has come a long way since making batches of kimchi in the basement. We hired some fantastic individuals and began producing kimchi for local restaurants, bodegas, and grocery stores. There is now a production facility in Brooklyn, New York and you can find the product throughout the United States as well as internationally.


One thing that will never change is our commitment to quality. Mama O's strives to make the best we can every time. We are dedicated to constantly improving our products and processes while holding on to our traditional hand crafted roots.

More Than Just Kimchi

These might not be your mama’s traditional kimchi, but they wouldn’t exist without it.

Every jar, every paste, every bite we make starts with the same roots: tradition, fermentation, and bold-as-hell flavor. We’ve taken that foundation and played with it, pushed it, had some fun.
